Colder than the North Pole, drier than the Sahara, with more than 99% of its land mass covered in ice, Antarctica is certainly not for the faint of heart. Yet that hasn't stopped the truly adventurous from visiting - from Shackleton to Byrd, explorers and scientists from around the world have long been drawn to the coldest continent on earth.
